After Mr. Bond was back from his vacation, he received
raving praises from everyone Rock had
performed a job for and about the talent of his newly hired hand. And
what made Mr. Bond extremely happy was a call from Mr.
Fowler praising Rock for his professionalism
and for the handling of his "rush job" in less than 48 hours that made
it possible for the printer to meet the deadline.
Mr. Bond called Rock to his office, and beaming with joy told him about
Mr. Fowler's phone call, and other raving reviews from others and
thanked him for the job well-done, and to his delight and surprise was
given another raise to $4 an hour. That, too, was hard for his
girlfriend to take, and their relationship soured and ended soon after
that.
He was saddened but accepted and devoted his time to his new
Godsend
profession. He moved out of the apartment they were sharing and moved
into an efficiency apartment near his work, and for the first time, had
his own place, he could call his home!
Mr. Bond was
Godsend.
He was very kind and generous. He took him in as a friend and a son. He
invited him to his house for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. His
wife was also very nice and kind. He worked for Mr. Bond for six months
or so before the seasonal job was complete and over. Mr. Bond try to
keep him on and even hired a newly college-graduated young man as Rock’s
assistance. But economically, it wasn’t possible since there was not
enough work for them to do and laid off the newly hired man. But Mr.
Bond liked Rock very much, and called him into his office and told him
to take the next two weeks with pay to prepare a portfolio of his newly
accomplished work, promising him that he would help him find another
job.
Rock thanked Mr. Bond and spend long hours every day for the next two
weeks and put together a very impressive portfolio of his work and
showed it to Mr. Bond. Mr. Bond was further very impressed with the
portfolio and immediately phoned his friend at a big graphic art company
while Rock was still in his office. He explained his situation and
highly recommended Rock with high praises, saying, "he'll be a great
addition to your company!" Mr. Bond gave Rock the phone number of the
person to call.
Rock went back to his office and immediately called the number and made
an appointment for the next day in the early afternoon. He met with
the new potential employer and was told that they like his work and
would like to offer him a job as a designer and paid him $5 an hour – a
great pay as the minimum wage was still below $2 an hour in those days.
That was a shocking surprise to him as it was to his now ex-girlfriend
and was coldly congratulated, but the most important news for him was
yet to come. He was on cloud nine and beyond once more. He now had
achieved the impossible; only six months earlier, he was told by his
girlfriend that it was not possible to achieve. But the most blessing
part was that in less than six months, he had gone from a hasty acted on
and perhaps, unattainable idea, with no experience or degree to an
ordinary “paste-up artist” and now to a designer – a job that is
reserved only for experienced artists with college degrees.
Again,
he contributed his good fortunes to God's
grace and blessings that he was born
with the talent in the first place and for giving the opportunities to
prospers with, all through his life. He knows it is
God that has
made all possible through His angels above and right here on the
ground.
